Mind the Waste
Hurghada, owing to its year-round dry and temperate climate and long stretches of natural beaches with magnificent marine life, is one of the most popular holiday destinations on the Red Sea coast. An increasing number of vacationers are progressively choosing to stay at private rental accommodation. This tendency has contributed to the growth of local economy, especially benefiting local property owners and developers. However, it has also inspired quick for-profit real estate development schemes, which, paired with lack of effective waste management programme, is destructive to the natural environment. Rubbish, including building construction waste and household goods, audaciously taking over the city, is a common occurrence in Hurghada show more
This observation prompted us to adopt an environmentally sensible approach to the process of turning this deserted 160 m² top floor apartment, with a private roof terrace, located in the modern part of Hurghada – El Kawser, into a functional and welcoming short-term rental accommodation.Establishing structural repairs as our number one priority and scads of redundant office furnishings as number one waste generator, the design framework for this project was based on adaptive reuse of salvaged building construction materials and goods acquired from refurbishment process, reintroducing them into the new structure of valuable interior components. For example, a set of cushy leather armchairs and a sofa, detrimented by the sun, were revived with new hard-wearing upholstery, and pieces of undamaged leather were used to upholster laminate classroom chairs. Salvaged wooden parapet, with gorgeous rampart balusters, was utilized to create bases for seven new side tables, a coffee table and a dining table. Leftover construction compounds, paints and thinners were used to create artwork and decorative elements.
This approach combined with introduction of new furnishings, designed in compliance with current functional requirements and future adaptability of composing elements and materials in mind, puts circular design practice at the core of environmentally responsible and cost-effective architectural design.
